On your automatic transmission the torque converter takes the place of a clutch on a manual transmission.  Your torque converter allows your engine to keep running after your vehicle comes to a stop.  The torque converter uses oil or transmission fluid to be precise in power distribution.  The pump, turbine and stator make up three important parts of your torque converter.  Combined their job is to send power to your transmission.

Even the best torque converters can develop problems.  Your torque converter can fail due to overheating.  The overheating results from having high levels of slipping.  Your torque converter can’t remove heat if slipping is too frequent.  The continuous overheating can damage  the converter.  Other problems such as stator clutch breaking and seizing can happen.
